This year for Mother's Day I decided to rollup my sleeves and make a gift. No, I didn't break out the pasta and Elmer's, I to cut together something from a bunch of home VHS tapes. While the project was an obvious trip down memory lane, it also made me connect some dots from my past that have lead me to where I am and what I'm doing today.
The first video I ever made was back in the early 2000s with Windows Movie Maker. It was a slideshow of family photos put together with what I can only imagine was some sappy 90s song. I showed it to my mom and as I sat there while she watched it, something clicked for me. She started crying and it was at that moment I saw the power that video had. Sure, movies had evoked emotions from me before but I never realized that I too could wheeled that same power. That video started me down a path that has lead me to what I do today.
While it's hard to find time to do personal projects due to it inevitably feels a lot like work but that being said, it feels good to jump into some personal projects and circle back to where it started. I have a few others in the works and look forward to sharing and writing about them here.
